'Tragic accident': 16-year-old girl dead, 5 other teens hurt in crash on Columbus Boulevard

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A 16-year-old girl is dead and five other teens are hurt after police said their vehicle went airborne while exiting I-95 in South Philadelphia early Friday morning.

Police and paramedics responded to a 911 call about the crash at around 1 a.m. along the 700 block of S. Christopher Columbus Blvd.

Police said three young men and three young women were riding in the vehicle.

First responders found the car on its side, crumpled in the front and passenger side with several people trapped, some of them unresponsive.

Action News was told medics got all six of them out of the vehicle and that the three young women sustained the worst injuries.

Police say the driver is a 17-year-old male, who is in stable condition.

A 16-year-old girl, who was riding in the back seat, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A 15-year-old girl was also taken to the hospital in critical condition.

A 17-year-old female is also in critical condition, according to investigators.

Two 17-year-old males, one in the front passenger seat and the other in the back seat, were both taken to CHOP in stable condition.

A witness told police the vehicle was getting off of I-95 South at the Washington Ave. exit and was making the sharp curve onto Christopher Columbus Blvd when it lost control.

"The vehicle struck a curb and according to a witness, the vehicle then went airborne and landed on its passenger side," said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

"This is just a tragic accident only involving one vehicle," Small said.
